OUR HISTORY
TGT strives to capture the spirit of the classic cultural pilgrimage made by British and Americans who, beginning in the 17th century, wished to complete their educations by observing the great sites of the classical age and Renaissance in person. This sojourn abroad—a movable feast of history, architecture, fine art, good food, and often general revelry—came over time to be known as THE GRAND TOUR.
TGT began in 1999 in Seattle by Peter Straus, Marc Mariani and Tyler Lansford, bound by a mutual love of Italy and the desire to create tours for inquisitive, independent-minded travelers. When both Marc and Tyler stepped away to pursue careers in teaching, Peter moved the company to Peterborough, New Hampshire, in 2003. Inspired by a love of classical music and drawing on an extensive network of friends and associates in the world of non-profits, over the next 10 years Peter would transform TGT into one of the principal purveyors of high-end cultural tours in the country. Marc returned in 2024 and in 2026 will take over direction of the company, allowing Peter to focus wholly on music tours.
