In the Shadow of the Volcano!
Naples and the Amalfi Coast

Join WDAV and music host Phil Vavra on a grand musical tour of Naples and the majestic Amalfi Coast. Few cities can boast a cultural and musical heritage to equal that of Naples. Renowned already in antiquity for its restless, resourceful spirit and vibrant hybrid culture, modern Naples would flower anew in the late Renaissance as the cultural and political hub of the Spanish Aragonese dynasty. By the beginning of the 18th century, the city would rival Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, and London as the greatest and wealthiest capital of Europe, famous as much for its architecture, art, universities, and music as for the moody volcano looming over it and the sparkling bay at its feet. What other European capital could match the beauty of its surroundings? Or boast the dramatic allure of a Positano, a Ravello, a Capri? There was simply no place like it on earth.

Our journey will start in the heart of old Naples, within walking distance of Teatro San Carlo, the oldest continuously active opera house in the world—we will visit it three times—and continue in the serenely picturesque town of Ravello, our base for four days, and, like Naples, famous for its unique connections to the world of music. World-class museums and expert guides, deluxe lodging and fine cuisine, combined of course with the great music you will hear and your music host’s commentary on it—not to mention private concerts in settings of unsurpassed beauty—are a few of the things that make this trip such a rare opportunity.

Don’t miss it!
